Nestled just 16 miles from the Pacific, the Presqu’ile Vineyard is the beating heart of our estate. This is where our story takes root — across 200 acres of hillside, shaped by coastal wind, sun, fog, and sandy soils.

What began as an unplanted canvas in 2007 has evolved into a meticulously designed vineyard, shaped by the vision of the Murphy family, winemaker Dieter Cronje, and longtime vineyard manager Jim Stollberg. Every slope, breeze pattern, and soil texture was studied before the first vine was planted. The goal: diversity. In row direction, spacing, elevation, clones, rootstocks — each decision made to give us the fullest expression of this site.

Today, the vineyard stretches across 73 acres of vines and seven varieties, with Pinot Noir at the core. Five clones of Pinot grow alongside Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and a small but spirited block of Nebbiolo. Many are own-rooted. The terrain ranges from 700 to 1,000 feet in elevation, giving us an intricate mosaic of blocks, each with its own voice.

Presqu’ile sits within the Santa Maria Valley AVA — a transverse valley cooled by fog and marine air funneled in from the Pacific. With an average annual temperature of just 64°F and one of the longest growing seasons in California, this is true cool-climate winemaking. The sandy loam soils hold little water, which drives roots deep and yields fruit of incredible concentration and natural acidity.

Certified Sustainable in Practice (SIP), our estate vineyard reflects our long-term commitment to stewardship — of the land, the people who farm it, and the community we’re part of.

East/West

Tucked into the heart of Sta. Rita Hills, Sanford & Benedict is more than a vineyard — it’s a piece of California wine history. First planted in 1971, this is where Pinot Noir found its foothold on the Central Coast. It’s home to the oldest Pinot vines in Santa Barbara County, and today, with 51 acres of the original planting still farmed.

What makes this site extraordinary isn’t just its legacy, but its resilience. These vines were planted on their own roots and have flourished for over four decades. The soils are rich in calcium, streaked with fractured shale and chert — remnants of a mountain that shifted more than a million years ago. It’s a rugged, expressive place and it shows in the fruit.

Pinot Noir is the heart of Sanford & Benedict. With more than 20 individual blocks and 11 clones across the vineyard, there’s nuance in every row. It’s no wonder Wine Enthusiast named it one of the five most iconic vineyards in California. For us, it’s a privilege to work with a site that continues to shape the future of cool-climate wine.

Orientation

Bien Nacido is one of the Santa Maria Valley’s most legendary growing sites. The site was originally planted in 1973 by the Millar family. The soils are dense and rocky with clay and sandstone. We find this produces a structured, fruit-driven wine. Our Chardonnay comes from W and I Block and our Pinot Noir comes from G Block and Block 44.
